Building Relationships with Galleries for Artists – SOLD OUT

Time: 02/23/2018: 4:00PM–5:30PM
Location: Room 513

Workshop Leader: Michael Azgour, Stanford University

This workshop engages fine artists by posing fundamental questions and discussing effective practices for developing relationships with galleries. We begin by asking ourselves three essential questions in regards to our personal and professional goals. Then we discuss how to productively build an exhibition record based on those goals. Participants take a moment to ask, ‘What holds me back from reaching out to galleries?’ We consider responses and examine our different roles as professional artists. Attendees gain insight into practical methods of locating most suitable galleries—those that are the best fit for one’s own style and level of experience. Personal experiences are shared as a way to shed light on what works. We examine submitting applications, keeping track of progress, future contact, and mailing lists as components of an effective process for building gallery representation over time. We touch upon maintaining gallery relationships and what to expect in terms of sales, commission, and shipping. Finally, we briefly discuss online presence and pursuing alternative paths, such as online markets, reproductions, grants, residencies, public art and outside employment. Useful resources, examples, and links are distributed to help participants get started. Questions and answers.
