“Who Can Speak for Whom? Artistic Freedom and the Challenges of Dealing with the Pain of Historical Trauma”

Time: 02/21/2018: 12:30PM–1:30PM
Location: Room 403B

MODERATOR: Svetlana Mintcheva, National Coalition Against Censorship
PANELISTS: Sam Durant, artist; Vanessa Place, poet/artist/criminal defense lawyer;  Pilar Tompkins Rivas, Vincent Price Art Museum, Anne Ellegood, The Hammer Museum, Naima J. Keith, California African American Museum

Can free speech be isolated as an absolute value when any practice of freedom is inevitably affected by the social and political context of unequal power relations, themselves a result of a long history of oppression and violence?  Recent controversies around Dana Shutz’ painting of Emmett Till and Sam Durant’s Scaffold, as well as debates over historical murals, have generated impassioned debates over artists’ and institutions’ responsibilities and put into question our commitment to free speech.

The panel will discuss the ethical issues involved in historical representation, and consider what artists and institutions can do to uphold artistic freedom, while also responding to demands for social justice.
