Attendee Guidelines

Guidelines for Attendees at the CAA Annual Conference

The College Art Association (CAA) Annual Conference provides an important and unique opportunity for the exchange of ideas among those in the visual arts, engagement with colleagues in a variety of ways, circumstances for professional development and occasions to mentor emerging professionals.

Our hope is that every attendee will benefit from his or her participation during the Conference. It is our goal that the Annual Conference is welcoming and inclusive for all, and we propose the following guidelines for attendees at the Annual Conference:

  • All participants should be treated with respect and consideration, valuing the diversity of views and opinions that may be different from their own.
  • Communicate with respect for others; critique ideas rather than individuals.
  • Avoid personal attacks directed towards Conference participants and attendees.
  • Be mindful of your colleagues and your surroundings.
  • Professionalism is to be exercised at all times.

The following are examples of behavior that will NOT be tolerated at the Annual Conference, or at any other organized meetings or events whether at the Conference center or off-site:

  • Physical or verbal harassment, threats, intimidation or discrimination of any kind, or in any form.
  • While CAA values complete freedom of expression, any verbal comments or actions related to gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, disability, physical appearance, ethnicity, race, religion, citizenship status, county of origin which may reasonably be interpreted as offensive, insulting, or obscene, or any conduct of a stalking or threatening nature directed to any Conference participant or attendee.
  • Behavior deemed to be excessively loud and/or disruptive of a meeting or any other event taking place during the Annual Conference.
  • Unlawful conduct or activity of any kind.

Reporting inappropriate behavior:

  • If you are the subject of or witness to conduct in violation of these guidelines at the Annual Conference, do not hesitate to notify a CAA staff member who will immediately contact the Executive Director to address the situation.
  • CAA will use all reasonable efforts to respond and resolve the matter in a timely manner, respectful of the parties and necessary to ensure the continued integrity and quality of the Conference.
  • Anyone experiencing or witnessing behavior that constitutes an immediate or serious threat to public safety at the Annual Conference in the convention center or hotel is advised to urgently locate a house phone and request “Security” or dial 911.

CAA at all times reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to see that individuals acting contrary to these guidelines are removed from the Conference or any meeting or event taking place at the Conference and has the right to prohibit attendance at any future Conference.
